City Of Las Vegas Offers Shakespeare In October
"The Mad Mind of Shakespeare" Oct. 16-17 At Charleston Heights Arts Center
"The Taming Of The Shrew" Oct. 22-24 Outdoors At Sammy Davis Jr. Festival Plaza
The city of Las Vegas invites the public to enjoy two Shakespeare productions this month.
Vegas City Opera joins forces with the Nevada Shakespeare Festival for "The Mad Mind of Shakespeare," Oct. 16-17 at Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 Brush St. Shows will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday. Expect a thrilling performance of song and speech drawn from the bard's most unhinged imaginations. From "Hamlet" to "Othello" to the Scottish play we dare not name, obsession, ambition, love and lunacy collide in a haunting theatrical concert guided by a mysterious spirit. Expect passion, poetry and just enough darkness to keep you deliciously on edge. General admission tickets are $30, $20 for seniors/veterans; available online here. Seniors/veterans use promo code SENIOR10 or MILITARY10 for the discount. Madness has never sounded so good.
Nevada Shakespeare Festival, in partnership with the city of Las Vegas, is bringing a free, full-scale production of "The Taming of the Shrew" to the Sammy Davis Jr. Festival Plaza at Lorenzi Park for three nights, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 22-24. No tickets, no fees, no reservations required - just enjoy real, professional Shakespeare under the stars.
The Royal American Society of Shakespearean Players Troupe tackles Shakespeare's fierce farce about gender roles and materialism. Every performance of this explosive battle of the sexes quickly goes from bad to utterly disastrous as Petruchio tries to "tame" the sharp-tongued Katherine. This isn't a scaled-down sampler. With a 12-person cast and a full 2.5-hour running time, this is a professional production. Shakespeare's fierce, funny, battle-of-the-sexes farce, adapted with the Festival's signature punk-rock energy, is staged entirely outdoors and completely free. Petruchio sets out to "tame" the sharp-tongued Katherina, Baptista fields suitors for his more favored younger daughter Bianca, and the whole affair spirals into the gleeful chaos of a play that goes completely wrong. Recommended for ages 10 and older.
Performances are general admission and free to attend. Organizers expect crowds of up to 400 each night, so guests are encouraged to arrive early, spread a blanket or set up low-back chairs, and get settled before the show begins. Gates open at 6 p.m. each night; the play begins at 7 p.m. The plaza is located at 720 Twin Lakes Drive, on the west side of Lorenzi Park. No glass containers or pets are allowed. Food trucks will offer refreshments for sale.
