Governor Newsom Signs Assemblymember Fong’s AB 2436, Cementing the State’s Support for Team USA Athletes

ALHAMBRA, CA - Assemblymember Mike Fong (D-Alhambra), Chair of the Assembly Higher Education Committee, announced that Governor Gavin Newsom has signed AB 2436 into law, permanently allowing qualifying Team USA student-athletes training in California to receive resident classification for tuition and fee purposes at California's public colleges and universities.

Sponsored by LA28, AB 2436 comes as California prepares to host the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles and strengthens the state's support for Team USA athletes pursuing higher education while training and competing at the elite level.

"As California prepares to welcome the world for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, we have an opportunity to ensure the impact of LA28 extends far beyond the competition," said Assemblymember Mike Fong. "AB 2436 makes a lasting commitment to the Team USA athletes who train in our state by ensuring they can pursue an affordable, high-quality education while representing our country at the highest level. I thank Governor Newsom and LA28 for their partnership in making sure California continues supporting our athletes both on and off the field of play."

AB 2436 creates a lasting benefit for generations of Team USA athletes preparing for future Olympic and Paralympic Games and reinforces California's position as a premier destination for athletes to train, compete, and earn a college education. AB 2436 takes effect on January 1, 2027.
