• Technology enables an increase in wi-fi reliability during the trip
• Solution is especially useful in areas with more restricted mobile coverage
CP - Comboios de Portugal is conducting satellite connectivity tests on one of the Alfa Pendular trains to offer faster and more reliable wi-fi service on board trains during the trip.
The technology uses satellite communication antennae as a complement to the current on-board communications system, which is supported by national mobile networks.
The solution enables strengthening the internet connection in areas where mobile coverage is more restricted, significantly improving the digital experience for passengers on board.
The pilot project allows the collection of technical and operational indicators with a view to assessing the solution's stability in terms of coverage, performance, and quality.
The pilot project, which uses Starlink technology, was installed on one of the Alfa Pendular trains.
"Stable, reliable wi-fi with quality throughout the entire trip will become a reality because people need to be at the core of our mobility policy. It is, without doubt, another strong incentive for the Portuguese people to use public transportation", stated the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing Miguel Pinto Luz.
