DPW to Begin Overnight Leaf and Snow Removal Operations

DPW to Begin Overnight Leaf and Snow Removal Operations

Published on October 30, 2026

The transition from fall to winter in the City of Syracuse is approaching. Syracuse Mayor Sharon F. Owens announced the Department of Public Works (DPW) will launch its overnight shift for the late fall and winter months beginning on Sunday night, November 1. Crews who are on duty to plow streets in the event of early morning snowfall will be deployed to pick up leaves on city streets when it's not snowing.

"As temperatures drop and we move into the colder months, our crews are preparing to keep Syracuse's streets accessible around the clock," said Mayor Owens. "Whether it is responding to early snowfall or picking up fall leaves, we are committed to helping residents move safely and comfortably through the season. We are grateful for the dedication of the DPW crews and their continued service to our residents as we transition into the colder months."

The City provides leaf pickup as a service to residents in November with work taking place during both daytime and overnight hours. Leaf pickup vehicles are equipped with audible beeps for safety, and some units create scraping and banging noises while collecting loose leaves and branches. Residents are encouraged to place all leaves in paper bags which should be placed between the sidewalk and curb, separated from all other waste. Fire hydrants, poles, trees, vents, or catch basins should not be blocked. This season, the Department of Public Works is introducing a new leaf vacuum trailer for leaf collection for more efficient services and to mitigate damage on the roads.

"We know the noise from overnight collection can be disruptive, and we truly appreciate residents' patience," said Jeremy Robinson, Commissioner of Public Works. "Our goal is to clear leaves efficiently before they cause flooding or slow down snowplow operations. Bagging leaves helps our crews work faster and quieter, keeping the process safe and effective for everyone. Our crews take great pride in serving our residents, and this effort reflects our commitment to keeping neighborhoods accessible and cared for throughout the colder months."

Residents may also use the City's yard waste drop-off site at 1200 Canal Street Extension, accessible from South Midler Avenue between Interstate 690 and Erie Boulevard. The site accepts brush, branches, and leaves and operates from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.
