Severe Weather Impacting Southwest Operations - El Paso Subdivision Out of Service

Date
Sep 30, 2026

BNSF is actively addressing service disruptions across parts of the Southwest and Southern Plains, where heavy rainfall and flash flooding associated with the remnants of Hurricane Polo have caused track damage and are impacting train operations.

On the El Paso Subdivision, heavy rainfall and flash flooding caused multiple washouts and flood-damaged locations across a 150-mile stretch of track between Sabinal and Rincon, New Mexico, resulting in the subdivision being taken out of service.

BNSF engineering teams are working diligently to repair the damaged track, including building temporary access roads to reach some locations with heavy equipment. The El Paso Subdivision is expected to return to service on Friday. Once the line reopens, customers should expect some residual delays as trains held during the outage move through the area.

To help manage traffic flows while recovery efforts continue, BNSF has issued an embargo (BNSF001126) affecting all traffic moving to, from or through our El Paso Subdivision.

On the Gallup Subdivision, a washout near Lupton, Arizona, took one of two main tracks out of service early Monday, limiting operations through the area. Crews rebuilt the damaged embankment and returned the subdivision to normal operations Tuesday afternoon.

Severe weather, including heavy rain, flash flooding and high winds, is also impacting train operations across portions of our Southern Transcon route from Arizona through the Texas Panhandle and Kansas. Flash flood warnings across the route require reduced train speeds and additional track inspections, which may extend transit times. Additional storms are expected across parts of Texas and the Southern Plains over the next several days as this weather system moves east, and more weather-related impacts are possible through the remainder of the week. Our operations teams are closely monitoring conditions and taking necessary actions to minimize service disruptions.

Customers with shipments moving to, from or through the Southwest and Southern Plains should expect delays as weather continues to move through the region and recovery efforts progress. Customers tracing their freight may notice nonstandard routings, locations and interchanges, and longer-than-normal transit times.

For impacted shipment inquiries, please use the "Message Us" feature on the BNSF Customer Portal (registration and login required) or contact BNSF Customer Support at 1-888-428-2673. Additionally, please reach out to your BNSF marketing representative with any questions.

About Embargoes: Embargoes are temporary holds placed on freight to restrict the acceptance and handling of freight. You can search embargoes at the Association of American Railroads (AAR) Embargo Railinc website (enter "BNSF" in the Issuing Road field to view active embargoes).
