Congresswoman McDonald Rivet Statement on Department of Homeland Security Vote

WASHINGTON- Congresswoman Kristen McDonald Rivet (MI-08) released the following statement in response to today's vote on funding for the Department of Homeland Security.

"The first responsibility of our government is to keep our citizens safe. This version of ICE is doing the opposite. It has sowed chaos on our streets, and kidnapped and killed American citizens. I have been clear that I will not vote to send our taxpayer dollars to ICE until reforms are made to bring its operations in line with those of every other law enforcement agency - such as unmasking and using body cameras, requiring judicial warrants, adhering to common use of force standards, and implementing standard law enforcement recruitment and training standards.

"Still, we need to fund the rest of the Department of Homeland Security and the essential work patriotic public servants carry forward - from FEMA and the Coast Guard to anti-terrorism and anti-trafficking task forces. My colleagues and I have a bill to pass this exact DHS funding package, with ICE carved out while we negotiate important reforms. The Speaker needs to bring it to the floor.

"This Administration and Republican Leadership need to come to the table and seriously negotiate meaningful reforms to ICE operations, and as we work out those details, put the safety of American families first by allowing a vote on our bill to fund the rest of DHS."
