Holiday Safety Tips From the City of Goodyear

The holidays are a time for celebrations, gatherings and travel. To help everyone enjoy the season safely and stress-free, the city of Goodyear is sharing five simple holiday safety tips.

  • Don't Toss Lithium-Ion Batteries in the Trash: Get a new electronic for the holidays and tossing out the old one? More than likely, it has a rechargeable or a lithium-ion battery, which should never be placed in the trash or recycling container. These batteries can spark fires in trash trucks, recycling facilities and landfills. Get rid of them at a battery drop-off location such as Best Buy, Home Depot or Lowe's, or curbside using the city of Goodyear's free Household Hazardous pickup service. Learn more at www.goodyearaz.gov/HHW.
  • Recycle Right During the Holidays: Holiday packaging adds up quickly, but not everything belongs in the recycling container. You can recycle flattened cardboard boxes, plain paper wrapping paper (no glitter, foil or plastic coating) and simple paper gift bags without heavy decorations. Items like bows, ribbon, tinsel and shiny, glittery or foil wrapping paper show be tossed in the trash can. Find out what can be recycled and what needs to go in the trash at www.goodyearaz.gov/recycle.
  • Keep Christmas Trees Fire-Safe: Live holiday trees can dry out quickly and become a fire risk. Keep trees watered and away from heat sources. Dispose of trees once they begin to dry out and never burn trees in fireplaces or fire pits. Goodyear residents can place holiday trees on the curb for their bulk trash pickup day or drop it off at A to Z Equipment Rentals at 803 E. Van Buren St.
  • Protect Your Home While Traveling: Many families travel during the holidays, which can leave homes more vulnerable. Before you leave, lock all doors, windows and garage doors. Pause mail and package deliveries or ask a neighbor to collect them and avoid posting travel plans on social media until you return.
