New Castle County - New Fast Charging EV Stations Operational at Biden Welcome Center

Newark - The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) is pleased to announce the opening of twelve new electric vehicle (EV) fast-charging station bays at the Biden Welcome Center on I-95. The chargers were installed and will be operated by Applegreen Electric and was supported by $735,000 in federal funding from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Program.

Each station features two distinct charging ports, with each port offering a pair of CCS1/NACS connectors, allowing simultaneous charging of two EVs regardless of their connector type without the need for an adapter. The dual ports can provide power output up to 400kW total with each vehicle receiving a minimum of 150kW. The chargers are capable of charging a vehicle in under 20 minutes from 10% to 80% and offer multiple accessible payment methods and no membership or subscription is needed. Applegreen also manages the Biden Welcome Center and has staff onsite 24/7 to assist with any customer issues.

"When we passed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law in 2021, we were investing in a cleaner future through projects just like this," said Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester, a member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. "I was proud to champion that legislation in the House and I am elated to see our communities put this federal funding to good use. With today's announcement, Delaware is taking a big step forward in expanding access to electric vehicle charging stations and building a greener economy that creates jobs and lowers costs for families."

"The Biden Welcome Center is one of the busiest travel plazas on the east coast and these new chargers will provide needed charging infrastructure for local EV owners and travelers alike," said Secretary of Transportation Shanté Hastings. These new EV fast-charging stations support Delaware's efforts to expand EV charging along the state's Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFC) to make EV charging more accessible as the number of EVs in use continues to grow."

DelDOT is also preparing to issue the NEVI Round Two Request for Proposals (RFP) in the coming weeks. This next round of funding will focus on further expanding the availability of EV fast charging stations along the AFC while also expanding public charging access in areas of the state with a high number of multifamily residences, and in communities where residents may not have access to private, overnight charging.

The NEVI Program was created through the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and supports the development of a nationwide EV charging network. Delaware is using NEVI funding to strengthen its AFC network and improve charging availability statewide.
