How the Creative Events Management Online master's took my career to the next level

After a career spanning more than three decades in the global festivals and events industry, Cindy Lerick chose to return to study with Falmouth's Creative Events Management MA (Online). The experience helped her deepen her expertise, reconnect with her purpose and prepare to inspire the next generation of event professionals. Now a Professor of Practice at Kansas State University, Cindy has since been inducted into the International Festivals and Events Association Hall of Fame in recognition of her lifelong contribution to the industry.<_o3a_p>

What first attracted you to Falmouth's MA in Creative Events Management, and why did you decide to study online?<_o3a_p>

The timing could not have been better. It was during Covid, and I had been wanting to teach in higher education within the event management field. In the USA, you need at least an MA to teach at that level, so I wanted to pursue it specifically in event management. After talking with the course team at Falmouth, I realised it was the perfect fit for me. The fact that there would be summer meet ups was also really appealing. I loved the idea of connecting with people in person.<_o3a_p>

You've had an impressive career in events and festivals. What made you feel the time was right to return to study?<_o3a_p>

I had reached my peak in my current role, and while I knew I could easily get another job managing an organisation that produces events, I personally needed more. I needed a change. I really had my mind set on teaching in higher education. It was time to move from doing events to helping shape the next generation of event professionals. To do that, I needed the academic credentials and deeper theoretical grounding that the MA would provide.<_o3a_p>

Which aspects of the course were most useful to your career? <_o3a_p>

Learning to look at events from multiple perspectives, not just the producers' viewpoint but from all stakeholders, was transformative. It also confirmed that I really did know what I was doing, which was incredibly affirming.<_o3a_p>

How did you find support and feedback from your tutors and the online learning community?<_o3a_p>

I am a relationship person, so having the opportunity for live classes, as well as being able to listen to recordings afterwards, really worked for me. As someone who is dyslexic, this platform was especially helpful. I learn best through conversations and discussions, and the format encouraged exactly that. I loved the diversity of the other students. They were from around the world and offered perspectives beyond my own American viewpoint. <_o3a_p>

What advice would you give to other professionals considering studying Creative Events Management online?<_o3a_p>

Depending on their career path and what they want to achieve, I would absolutely recommend the course. It is a great investment for anyone who wants to deepen their expertise or transition into teaching or consulting.
