Road Construction Update: Route 116 West of Peoria to Close in January for Major Bridge Repairs

December 17, 2025

IDOT has announced that Illinois Route 116 (Harmon Highway) just west of Peoria will close to all traffic on January 2, 2026. The closure could last up to a year, as the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

The closure is necessary to remove and replace the Route 116 bridge over Kickapoo Creek and Kickapoo Creek Roads, along with the Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Union Pacific railroads. The $23.2 million project will remove the old bridge and replace it with a new, four-span steel girder structure. Detours will be posted. Please drive with caution and slow down in work zones.
