Statement from Portland Mayor Keith Wilson

I want to thank every Portlander for making their voice heard about ICE's presence in our city. I agree with those saying loud and clear that our public safety is undermined by the actions taken by federal agents. That is why I called on ICE to end all operations in Portland until a full investigation can be completed of the January 8 shooting by federal agents in the Hazelwood neighborhood.

Regarding the notice of violation issued to the ICE facility, we must follow the process. Any attempt to unilaterally revoke the conditional land use approval would surely be challenged. We cannot allow hasty action to prevent us from taking meaningful action.

The land use process is just one way the City is standing up to federal overreach. We are fighting back with legal action. We are fighting back as a Sanctuary City that does not assist federal immigration enforcement. We are fighting back with the Protect Portland Initiative, passed unanimously by the City Council. We are fighting back alongside you and will continue to do so with every legal and legislative tool we have available to protect our residents' civil and human rights.
