U.S. Senator Tina Smith’s Statement on President Trump’s Threats to Commit War Crimes in Iran

MINNEAPOLIS, MN - U.S. Senator Tina Smith (D-MN) released the following statement after President Trump posted on Truth Social threatening "a whole civilization will die tonight" if Iran's leadership doesn't strike a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz:

"America's moral leadership and rule of law is what sets us apart from our adversaries in the world. President Trump's threats this morning to destroy an entire civilization and commit the United States to another endless war in the Middle East are completely wrong. Threatening war crimes undermines our nation's leadership in the world and opens U.S. servicemembers and civilians to reprisals and worse, both at home and abroad. President Trump is putting the lives of U.S. servicemembers at risk, distracting the nation from taking on other imminent threats to our national security like China and Russia, and leaving the U.S. military engaged in the Middle East for potentially years to come," said Senator Smith. "Further, the President's escalation of this war will continue to raise the already skyrocketing cost of gas and food here at home, making life even more unaffordable for Americans. The President must refrain from a dangerous, massive attack on Iran that will harm innocent civilians and instead bring this war to an end now."
