Surrey Heath Borough Council has passed a cross-party motion reaffirming its commitment to unity, respect and community cohesion.
At a time of increasing tension within the country, the motion recognises the impact that international conflicts and domestic challenges are having on local residents' sense of security and wellbeing.
Backed by councillors from all parties, it highlights the importance of mutual respect, dialogue and understanding across all communities. It also acknowledges the critical role that local agencies, voluntary organisations and faith groups play in maintaining harmony and support for all.
The council expressed its thanks to the emergency services, including local police, fire and ambulance teams, for their ongoing dedication to keeping residents safe.
As part of the motion, the council resolved to assess and strengthen its policies and practices to ensure they reflect a zero-tolerance approach to antisemitism, Islamophobia, and all forms of prejudice and discrimination.
It will promote inclusive communication, ensuring that messages to residents and community groups bring people together rather than divide.
The council also aims to engage with all communities, particularly those feeling vulnerable, to reassure them that they are valued and respected.
In addition, it seeks to encourage responsible leadership, with all elected members committing to use social media and public platforms constructively and respectfully.
The council is committed to focusing on practical steps to strengthen community cohesion, build trust, and support those affected by local or global tensions.
Speaking jointly, Group Leaders from all parties said:
"This motion reflects a shared belief across all parties that Surrey Heath is strongest when we stand together.
"We are united in our commitment to protect the values of respect, inclusivity, and open dialogue that define our community.
"No one in Surrey Heath should feel unsafe or unwelcome because of who they are or what they believe."
In support, Surrey Police T/Inspector and Surrey Heath Borough Commander Ryan Scott said:
"Surrey Police remain dedicated to protecting every resident, challenging all forms of hatred and discrimination, and working alongside the council and community partners to build trust and reassurance during these challenging times.
"Together, we will continue to stand firm against division and ensure Surrey Heath remains a place where everyone feels safe."
