NATO Political Committee’s first visit to Chișinău

On 25-26 August 2026 the NATO Political Committee (PC) travelled for its first visit to Chișinău, Republic of Moldova on the eve of Moldova's Independence Day.

Th PC met with the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, and held a working session with the participation of the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mihai Popșoi, State Secretary Valeriu Mija, and National Security Adviser Stanisla​v Secrieru. The Committee also visited the Ministry of Defence and participated in a demonstration of military equipment donated through NATO and bilateral support.

The Chair of the Political Committee, Tanya Hartman, highlighted that the visit of the PC to Moldova is an "example of our growing relationship, our intensified political and practical cooperation. Our visit here on the eve of Moldova's Independence Day is also a testament of our enduring support to Moldova's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence. "

The discussions between Allied representatives and their Moldovan counterparts focused on current priorities in NATO-Moldova partnership and opportunities to further support Moldova as it confronts regional security challenges.

Allies welcomed Moldova's reforms and efforts to strengthen its resilience, as well as its contributions to regional security, including its participation in KFOR, NATO's peacekeeping mission in Kosovo. They also praised Moldova's resilience against Russian malign interference and its staunch support for Ukraine.

The Political Committee has a central advisory role for the North Atlantic Council. It discusses and exchanges information and assessments on political and regional developments of interest to Allies.

The Alliance supports Moldova as modernises its defence institutions and strengthens its resilience through a number of initiatives, including the Individually Tailored Partnership Programme and the enhanced Defence Capacity Building Package, based on Moldova's requests, in full respect of its constitutional​ neutrality.
