High-Level Event on Glaciers’ Preservation and Climate Resilience at the United Nations

On September 25, 2026, on the margins of the High-Level Week of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, the Republic of Tajikistan, together with Nepal and other co-sponsors, co-convened a High-Level Side Event entitled "Sagarmatha to the Sea: A Call to Action for a Climate-Resilient Future" at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan H.E. Mr. Sirojiddin Muhriddin participated in and addressed the event.

In his statement, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan emphasized the vital link between mountain ecosystems, water resources and downstream communities. He noted that approximately 1,300 glaciers in Tajikistan have disappeared over the past fifty years and stressed the need for strengthened scientific monitoring, early-warning systems, climate-resilient infrastructure, technology cooperation and accessible climate finance. He also reaffirmed Tajikistan's continued efforts to advance the global agenda on glacier preservation and water, including through the International Year of Glaciers' Preservation, the International Trust Fund in Support of Activities for Glaciers' Preservation and the Dushanbe Water Process.

The event was attended by H.E. Mr. Shisir Khanal, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Nepal, H.E. Dr. Khalilur Rahman, President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, H.E. Ms. Iruthisham Adam, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives, as well as representatives of UN Member States, United Nations entities, international financial institutions, scientific institutions and other stakeholders.

The event underscored the importance of strengthened international cooperation to preserve glaciers, safeguard water resources and build climate resilience across mountain, downstream, coastal and island communities. Participants highlighted the need for enhanced scientific cooperation, early-warning systems, accessible climate finance, technology transfer and coordinated regional and international action to address interconnected climate risks from the mountains to the sea.
