Baker McKenzie Strengthens Support for Legal Talent in Ukraine Through Academic Scholarships and Practitioner-led Courses

Baker McKenzie's Kyiv office continues its longstanding commitment to advancing legal education in Ukraine. The Firm works closely with the country's leading universities to support, inspire, and equip the next generation of legal professionals during a particularly challenging period.

Baker McKenzie has awarded scholarships to 10 high-achieving students for the 2025-2026 academic year. The recipients include three students from the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (NaUKMA) and seven students from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, representing both the Institute of Law and the Institute of International Relations. Each scholarship recipient will also be invited to undertake an internship at the firm's Kyiv office during the 2026-2027 period, gaining valuable exposure to legal practice.

Investment in academic teaching remains a cornerstone of the Firm's cooperation with universities. The Firm has continued its contribution to international legal education for the third consecutive academic year by participating in the teaching program of the Institute of International Relations' International Law Department. Counsel Myroslava Koval-Lavok and Associates Anna Trishnevska and Oleksandr Savvi have played an active role in delivering courses covering labor law, intellectual property, and international private law.

For the seventh year in a row, Baker McKenzie lawyers have delivered a specialized guest course in commercial law to master's students at NaUKMA's Law Department. Senior Associates Hanna Smyrnova and Khrystyna Oleniuk, together with Associate Volodymyr Stetsenko, combined academic instruction with practical insights across eight lectures and eight seminars addressing key areas such as sanctions, data protection, and compliance.

Baker McKenzie's commitment to compliance and ethics education is further demonstrated through its longstanding involvement with the Anti Corruption Compliance Certificate Program at NaUKMA. For the eighth consecutive year, Counsel and Head of the Compliance and Investigations Practice, Ario Dehghani, has led the course in cooperation with the university's Anti Corruption Research and Education Centre. In addition, Ario continues to contribute to NaUKMA's academic community as a senior lecturer in German and international law and as co-director of the German Law Institute.
