Near-Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision (Updated to Fatal)

UPDATE:

On Thursday, December 11, 2025, at approximately 12:00 p.m., the operator of the Toyota succumbed to his injuries and died while at Maui Memorial Medical Center. The operator is identified as Mason Pang (19), of Makawao.

The Maui Police Department extends our deepest condolences to Mr. Pang's family and friends.

This is Maui County's 18th traffic fatality of 2025, compared to 14 at the same time last year.

On Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at approximately 12:14 a.m., a motor vehicle collision occurred on Haleakala Highway, 0.6 miles east of Old Haleakala Highway in Pukalani.

Preliminary investigations revealed that a black 2020 Honda Ridgeline executed a short left turn from Old Haleakala Highway to head west on Haleakala Highway when it collided head-on with a gray 1998 Toyota Tacoma that was traveling east on Haleakala Highway. Following the collision, the Honda operator, a 31-year-old male, known to frequent central Maui, fled the scene on foot in an unknown direction to an unknown location.

As a result of the collision, the passenger of the Honda, a 32-year-old Wailuku female, sustained multiple injuries and was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center for further treatment. The operator of the Toyota, a 19-year-old Makawao male, sustained critical, life-threatening injuries and was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he remains.

Investigation reveals that:

It is unknown if the operator of the Honda was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.

The passenger in the Honda was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.

The operator of the Toyota was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.

The airbags in both vehicles did deploy during the collision.

The involvement of speed, alcohol, and drugs has not been determined as the investigation is still ongoing.

The 31-year-old male who fled the scene has been identified as Kaleo Kubo (31). The Maui Police Department is asking for the public's assistance in locating him as he is wanted for an active no-bail warrant and in conjunction with this motor vehicle collision.
