The Axencia Galega de Innovación (Gain) has begun drafting the new Biotechnology Excellence Strategy 2026-2030 in Galicia with a survey aimed at professionals in the sector. The objective is to consolidate the region as an internationally recognized bioregion.
The collaboration agreement with the Clúster Tecnolóxico Empresarial das Ciencias da Vida (BIOGA) aims to provide advisory and consultancy services. The strategy, which will be integrated into the Galician Research and Innovation Plan 2025-2027, is expected to be presented before the summer of 2026.
Biotechnology in Galicia is showing increasing dynamism, with growth in biotech companies, entities linked to this technology, investment in R&D, and employment in research and development.
The Axencia Galega de Innovación (Gain) has launched a public survey aimed at professionals in the sector to gather key information for the development of the new Biotechnology Excellence Strategy 2030. The announcement was made by the Regional Minister for Education, Science, Universities and Vocational Training, Román Rodríguez, during the signing of a collaboration agreement with the president of the Clúster Tecnolóxico Empresarial das Ciencias da Vida (BIOGA), José Manuel Vilariño. This agreement, with a budget of €70,000, aims to provide advisory and consultancy services to consolidate Galicia as a leading international bioregion.
The new strategy will continue the 2021-2025 plan and will be integrated into the Galician Research and Innovation Plan 2025-2027, where biotechnology is identified as a high-impact initiative. The work schedule foresees an analysis of trends and capabilities until March, while the drafting of the final document will take place between April and May, with the aim of presenting the official strategy before the summer of 2026.
According to the latest data from the 2021-2023 mid-term report, biotechnology in Galicia shows increasing dynamism: the region already has 66 pure biotechnology companies and more than 160 entities linked to this technology. Investment in biotech R&D has grown by more than 20% compared to 2020, currently employing over 1,720 professionals dedicated exclusively to research and development in this field.
