WASHINGTON, D.C. - On July 17, 2026, the Republic of Honduras deposited its Instrument of Ratification of the Convention on the Settlement of Investment Disputes between States and Nationals of Other States (the ICSID Convention) with the World Bank, becoming the 159th Contracting State to the Convention.
In accordance with Article 68(2), the ICSID Convention will enter into force for Honduras on August 16, 2026.
The ICSID Convention establishes the institutional and legal framework for the settlement of international investment disputes. It was created to promote cross-border investment by providing an impartial, specialized forum for resolving investment disputes fairly, efficiently, and conclusively.
ICSID membership supports States' efforts to attract and retain foreign direct investment, fostering job creation and economic growth. It signals a State's openness to resolving disputes through arbitration, conciliation, and mediation in a trusted forum established under an international convention. Membership is voluntary, and States pay no fees to join or to maintain their membership.
ICSID's rules and procedures are tailored specifically to investment disputes between investors and States, and are designed to balance the interests of both. States commit to ICSID jurisdiction through written consent, whether in a contract with a foreign investor, a domestic investment law, or an international investment agreement or treaty.
As a Contracting State to the ICSID Convention, Honduras will participate in the governance of ICSID through its governing body, the Administrative Council, on which each Member State has one representative and one vote. The Administrative Council is responsible for adopting rules of procedure for ICSID cases and electing the ICSID Secretary-General and Deputy Secretary-General. Member States also have the right to designate arbitrators and conciliators to the ICSID Panels.
ICSID's Membership database contains a complete list of designations and notifications made by Member States to implement and apply the ICSID Convention, including their designations to the ICSID Panels of Arbitrators and of Conciliators.
