Community Leaders and Residents Celebrate Completion of Draper Park
On Monday, community leaders and residents came together to celebrate the completion of Draper Park, a pocket park built along the former railroad right-of-way in Marion, just south of the American Legion on 31st Street. It honors former Council member and community advocate, Paul Draper. Paul was a champion of Marion's progress and a leader in preserving the city's railroad history.
Many entities had a hand in helping bring the vision to life, including Coonrod Wrecker and Crane Service for moving the caboose from City Square Park in 2023 and repositioning it at Draper Park last August; Wabtec Corp. for repairing and refurbishing the railroad car; and Alliant Energy Foundation for their financial support to cover the cost of the move. Other contributors included RDG Planning & Design for developing the park concept and signage; Rathje Construction for serving as the contractor responsible for bringing the vision to life; and the Marion Parks & Recreation Department for putting the finishing touches on the park and for assuming the continued care of this community treasure. Additional thanks go to Tom Barnes and the team at Barnes Manufacturing; Sam Dillon, a local railroad signal maintainer; and Robert Cross, a work study student with Marion Independent School District, who all came together to tackle the nine-month process of restoring the railroad signal. The City also recognizes American Legion Post 298 for their service, partnership and shared parking spaces; as well as Carolyn, Scott and Kirk, and the rest of the Draper family, for the many years they shared Paul with the community. This park is a celebration of Marion's rich history. Thanks to all who were involved in its development.

The decals can be found on the Police Department's school resource officer vehicles, the Fire Department's staff vehicles and the garbage and recycling trucks in the Public Works Department. The decals and installation costs were funded by a donation from HOPEwalk CR.

Kudos to Lara Moellers
When an order for a City flag was cancelled by the supplier and there wasn't time to find a new vendor, Lara Moellers with the Marion Public Library came to the rescue! Lara is the MakerSpace library assistant and an incredible resource when it comes to bringing ideas to life. She offered tips for the type of blank flag to purchase and then skillfully applied the community logo using the MakerSpace's sublimation printer. Who knew there would be so much math involved?! The finished project looked fabulous and was completed on time and at a fraction of the cost. Thank you, Lara, for making us look good!!
