FEMA Approves More than $7 Million to Support Community Resilience and Recovery in Oregon and Washington

BOTHELL, Wash. - Today, FEMA announced more than $7 million to help Oregon and Washington strengthen community resilience, restore critical infrastructure and invest in mitigation measures to reduce future disaster damage.

This funding is part of the $584 million approved nationwide through FEMA's Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities, Public Assistance and Hazard Mitigation Grant Programs. These programs help states, local communities, tribes and territories to rebuild safer communities and protect infrastructure from future events. The funding supports President Donald J. Trump's commitment to improving federal disaster assistance and investing in projects that protect Americans.

FEMA is awarding $456,877 in Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities funding for eligible pre-disaster and hazard mitigation activities to promote resilience and reduce future disaster costs.

Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities projects include:

  • $238,077 to Oregon to address a vulnerable section of SW Beaverton Hillsdale Highway impacted by scour and erosion from Fanno Creek stormwaters.
  • $218,800 to the Upper Skagit Indian Tribe in Washington to fund the engineering design and assessment of seismic retrofitting of government buildings and water transmission and distribution mains.

Today's funding also includes $2.9 million under FEMA's Public Assistance program across Oregon and Washington.

Examples of Public Assistance projects include:

  • $1.4 million to Blachly-Lane County Cooperative Electrical Association in Oregon for permanent repairs as a result of the January 2024 winter storms.
  • $289,310 to Skagit County to design and identify the least cost method of repair for road damages as a result of the November 2022 winter storms.
  • $236,682 to the Washington State Patrol and $103,348 to the Washington State Department of Natural Resources to fund fire suppression measures as a result of the 2018 Ryegrass Coulee Fire.

FEMA is also awarding $3.9 million to Oregon through the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program to reimburse state management costs incurred through projects to prevent or reduce future disaster damage.

FEMA coordinates directly with the state on all recovery and hazard mitigation projects, ensuring recovery is state-led and federally supported.

These projects are part of FEMA's ongoing support for state and local communities rebuilding from disasters. FEMA remains committed to helping communities recover from hurricanes, severe storms, tornadoes and wildfires and to building resilience for the future.
