At the invitation of Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia Battsetseg Batmunkh, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi will visit Mongolia from June 13 to 15.
At the invitation of the French government, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier of the State Council Zhang Guoqing will attend the World Convergence Summit for Growth hosted by France via video link on June 11.
CCTV: To follow up on your announcement about Foreign Minister Wang Yi's visit to Mongolia, could you share more information on this visit?
Lin Jian: During the visit, Foreign Minister Wang Yi will meet with Mongolian leaders and hold talks with Mongolian Foreign Minister Battsetseg Batmunkh. Both sides will have communication on bilateral ties, practical cooperation as well as international and regional issues of mutual interest.
China and Mongolia are friendly neighbors connected by mountains and rivers. Under the strategic guidance of the two presidents, China-Mongolia relations have maintained sound momentum. China hopes that through this visit, the important consensus reached by the two leaders could be further implemented, promoting steady progress of China-Mongolia comprehensive strategic partnership.
TV Tokyo: Yohei Kono, who issued the Kono Statement and served as President of the Japanese Association for the Promotion of International Trade, has passed away. What is the Chinese foreign ministry's view on his passing, and how does it assess his contributions to China-Japan relations?
Lin Jian: We mourn for Mr. Yohei Kono's passing and offer our deepest sympathies to his family.
Mr. Kono is a dear old friend of the Chinese people. He held a correct view of history. In 1993 when he served as Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary, Mr. Kono issued an official statement on the "comfort women" issue to acknowledge the Japanese government's responsibility and express remorse and apology. Even to this day, the statement continues to exert a positive influence. Mr. Kono is regarded as a flagbearer in upholding Japan's pacifist Constitution. He once said, "Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution, which clearly stipulates that Japan renounces war and does not maintain war potential, represents our determination, resolve, and ideal." He dedicated his life to China-Japan friendship, visited China numerous times, and made important contributions to advancing bilateral relations and promoting exchanges and cooperation between the two countries. On his deathbed, he still had China-Japan ties at heart and said in tears that he wished to make one last visit to China. Unfortunately, due to his worsening condition, Mr. Kono's wish was not fulfilled.
Mr. Kono once said he would never forget the impact and joy when the two countries realized the normalization of diplomatic relations. History should not be forgotten, the conviction should be carried forward, and the commitments made should be honored. Under the current circumstances, these words hold even more relevance.
IRIB: China's four-point proposal on Iran emphasizes the sovereignty of the region. Yet U.S. bases in the Persian Gulf are used to attack Iran. Does China see these bases as a violation of and contradiction to West Asian sovereignty? What practical steps can China take to stop Persian Gulf states from enabling U.S. aggression against Iran?
Lin Jian: China is deeply concerned over the current situation. The use of force will only aggravate the situation. Military means cannot solve the fundamental issue. The sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of countries in the region should be respected and upheld. We urge the parties concerned to halt military actions at once, return to dialogue and negotiation, and respond to relevant countries' mediation efforts so that a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire could be realized as soon as possible.
Since the outbreak of the conflict, China has maintained close communication with all relevant parties, including Iran, and has been making active efforts to promote ceasefire and peace. Guided by the spirit of President Xi Jinping's four propositions, we will continue playing an active role in promoting ceasefire and ending hostilities and restoring peace and tranquility to the Middle East and Gulf region at an early date.
AFP: A court in Thailand has sentenced two men to death for their part in the 2015 terrorist attack in Bangkok. Several Chinese nationals were among the victims of that attack. I wondered if you had a comment on the verdict?
Lin Jian: We noted the sentencing made by Thailand on relevant case. That terrorist bombing attack claimed 20 lives, including seven Chinese nationals, and injured over 100. The perpetrators were utterly devoid of humanity and absolutely heinous. China supports Thailand in conducting the trials in accordance with the law and bringing the culprits to justice.
Shenzhen TV: Sources say that in response to the joint statement between China and Pakistan issued at the end of May, which said it is essential to "oppose any attempt to revive militarism," the Japanese government noted that its policy of exclusive defense and its commitment as a peaceful nation remain unchanged. What is China's comment?
Lin Jian: Opposing militarism is the unwavering common will of the international community. Any country that cherishes peace and upholds the postwar international order should make their just voice heard. While claiming to be for "peace" and "defense," Japan's action shows that it is speeding down the path of remilitarization-ramping up military expenditure, easing the export of lethal weapons, advancing the deployment of intermediate and long-range missiles, developing offensive military capability, hoarding sensitive nuclear materials, promoting the revision of its pacifist Constitution, and even advocating that Japan should become a war-capable nation. In fact, Japan has torn off the mask of "pacifist country" all by itself. The international community must stay on high alert and never allow Japanese militarism to return and menace the world again.
AFP: According to a piece in the Financial Times, China has canceled two high-level meetings with the EU this month because of rising trade tensions. I wondered if you could comment on this? And then a second related question is on whether Commerce Minister will still visit the EU later this month as has been reported?
Lin Jian: On your first question, as we've learned, China and the EU are in communication on relevant dialogue.
For your second question, I'd refer you to competent authorities.
AFP: U.S. authorities said that they have seized 13 internet domains that they claim were being used by Chinese intelligence to gain information from people in the U.S. who had U.S. security clearance. I just wondered if you had any comment on that?
Lin Jian: I'm not familiar with what you mentioned. We oppose vilifying China by peddling the so-called "Chinese spy" narrative, which is totally baseless. The one that has been openly and extensively engaged in espionage and intelligence gathering worldwide is none other than the United States itself.
