McDowell Introduces Resolution Honoring the 245th Anniversary of the Battle of Guilford Courthouse and Encouraging Tourism to Guilford County

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congressman Addison McDowell (NC-06)led Guilford County's three members of Congress in introducing a resolution honoring the 245th Anniversary of the 1781 Battle of Guilford Courthouse. The resolution encourages all Americans to celebrate America 250by visiting the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park in Guilford County.

"The Battle of Guilford Courthouse is an amazing example of American, and North Carolinian, resolve that we would rather die free than live under tyranny." Rep. McDowell said. "I encourage all Americans to honor our history during the 250th anniversary of our independence by visiting the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park and witnessing this history firsthand."

"North Carolina's history is steeped in unyielding patriotism, grit, and freedom. The Battle of Guilford Courthouse was an undeniable turning point in the struggle for American independence - it's only right that we recognize the heroism of those brave Americans who stood their ground that day in defense of freedom. Honoring our state's history and encouraging our fellow Americans to visit the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park will keep the story and contributions of the Tar Heel State alive and well," said Rep. Virginia Foxx.

"Two hundred forty-five years ago, North Carolina patriots stood their ground at Guilford Courthouse and struck a critical blow in the fight for American independence," said Rep. Richard Hudson."Though the British held the field, the heavy losses they suffered weakened their campaign in the South and helped set the stage for the American victory at Yorktown. We honor the courage of those who fought there and encourage Americans to visit Guilford Courthouse National Military Park to see history firsthand."

The Battle of Guilford Courthouse took place on March 15, 1781 during the Revolutionary War. After several hours of fighting, American troops led by General Nathanael Greene were able to inflict serious damage to an army led by British General Cornwallis. As a result of the battle, the British were forced to largely abandon their efforts to subjugate the Carolinas.

Americans can learn more about this battle, and see history firsthand, by visiting the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park in Greensboro. The park preserves the land where this battle took place and offers free self guided audio tours through the National Park Service App. You can learn more about the park here.
