Goat Grazing Season Has Begun in San Rafael

Goat grazing season has officially begun in San Rafael. The initial herd of 610 goats has begun their wildfire mitigation work off Idylberry Road in Lucas Valley. Goat grazing reduces wildfire risk through reducing standing fine fuels, which refers to how much dry grass and plant material is on the ground and may ignite in a fire.

To ensure goat and resident safety and to control the grazing area, the goats will be enclosed in low-voltage electric fencing. Please use caution when near the goats and keep children and pets away from the goats and fencing for their safety.

Please visit our Open Space Projects webpage for more information on the city's wildfire mitigation projects. Please also make sure to follow our socials to keep up with our projects, including where you can find our goats during grazing season!
