Artificial Intelligence in surgical rooms. AI in healthcare is no longer future, but already a matter...

22-12-2025

Artificial Intelligence has already made a concrete entry into Italian hospitals. Valeria Sandei, CEO of Almawave, tells Corriere Innovazione that she is bringing AI into the most complex healthcare processes, with a clear goal: to give time back to doctors and attention to patients.

Interviewed by Alessia Cruciani, Sandei says: "It all stems from the need to free the doctor from a series of tasks that are not directly related to patient care, but take up a huge part of their day. AI is precisely for this: to allow clinicians to work better, more efficiently, without taking attention away from the patient." For example, when drafting the operative report, a document that is crucial both clinically and administratively. "With AI, they can do it in real time, by voice. The system retrieves the necessary information, suggests a structured draft that the doctor then reviews and validates. This is a huge advantage: writing everything immediately makes the documentation more accurate and protects the patient. Doing it hours later, when memory is less clear, is less effective.

"So, can AI also help in retrieving clinical information during surgery? "

"Yes. Clinicians can consult manuals, patient data, and up-to-date values, all while operating. Information is available to the entire surgical team. It is a support increasing the quality and safety of the medical procedure, without ever taking away responsibility from the decision-maker."
