Major League Manager Mike Matheny Inspires Faith-Driven Leadership at CCU's President's Speaker Series

Colorado Christian University (CCU) welcomed former Major League Baseball manager Mike Matheny to campus for a President's Speaker Series event, a day devoted to Christ-centered leadership, mentorship, and athletic excellence.
Matheny, a four-time Gold Glove winner, former manager for the St. Louis Cardinals and Kansas City Royals, and the co-author of The Matheny Manifesto, spent the day with CCU students, student-athletes and coaches sharing insights on leadership, accountability, and faith.

"There's a pressure and a privilege that comes with being a Christian athlete," Matheny said. "People are watching how you handle adversity and success - and that's an opportunity to reflect something greater than yourself."

Throughout the day, Matheny addressed the student body during chapel, met with CCU's baseball and softball programs, spoke about integrating faith with competition. "Who you are has to be who you are everywhere," he told the athletes. "If you're a person of integrity and grit off the field, it's going to show on the field."

"Mike embodies the kind of leader we want our athletes to become - driven by excellence but defined by faith and service," said Jon Poag, CCU's Director of Athletics. "He reminded us that winning begins with character."

The evening concluded with CCU's Blue and Gold Banquet, where Matheny delivered the keynote address and legendary Coach Larry Hays was inducted into the CCU Athletics Hall of Fame.
Hays, who joined CCU as head softball coach in 2019 following a storied 40-year career in Texas collegiate athletics, has led the Cougars to multiple RMAC titles and national tournament appearances. Surrounded by family and players, he reflected on his time at CCU as a ministry.
"Coaching here has been a blessing," Hays said. "At CCU, teachers and coaches see our players as eternal beings. That makes all the difference."

CCU President Eric K. Hogue closed the evening by commending both men for embodying the University's mission.
"Mike and Larry are living examples of what it means to impact the world with grace and truth," Hogue said. "They model how faith and competition can work together for God's glory."
