Chairperson addressed leaders on vital role of forests/oceans in climate action

At the Climate & Nature: #Forests & #Oceans side event at #COP30 this morning, the Chairperson of the AU Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, addressed leaders on the vital role of forests & oceans in #climate action.

He underscored "the inseparable link between climate balance, forests, & oceans," noting that Africa, which holds 17% of the world's forests & vast marine ecosystems, "is central to global climate action, yet receives less than 5% of adaptation finance."

Highlighting Africa's leadership, he said: "From the Great Green Wall to the Congo Basin, Africa leads in nature-based solutions that restore land, create green jobs, & protect #biodiversity." However, he stressed that "global solidarity is essential; fair carbon markets, climate finance, & technology transfer must match Africa's ambition."

The session, opened by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, brought together heads of state & senior officials to build political momentum for accelerated global climate action.
