Speaker of the House of Representatives of Malta Anġlu Farrugia addressed members of the diplomatic corps, distinguished guests, and the Maltese community in Türkiye during a reception held in Istanbul to mark Malta's National Day.
The Speaker underlined that the celebration was not only a commemoration of Malta's independence and democratic journey but also an occasion to recognise the contribution of the Maltese community abroad, which continues to serve as a bridge of friendship and understanding between the two countries.
"Malta and Türkiye share a rich history and a common Mediterranean identity. Both our nations stand at the crossroads of civilizations, carrying responsibilities but also unique opportunities-to promote dialogue, strengthen cooperation, and build peace in a world facing complex challenges," stated Speaker Farrugia.
The Speaker also reaffirmed Malta's appreciation of Türkiye's role as a vital partner in the Mediterranean and beyond, pointing to areas of cooperation in trade, tourism, cultural exchange, and parliamentary dialogue. He also emphasised the importance of parliamentary diplomacy as a tool for building trust and fostering stronger collaboration between legislatures.
He further noted that this week Malta officially recognised the State of Palestine, underlining the country's long-standing commitment to peace, justice, and the rights of peoples under international law. On the eve of this recognition, 250 tonnes of flour were consigned from Malta as a concrete expression of solidarity with the Palestinian people in their time of urgent humanitarian need.
In his remarks, Dr Farrugia expressed his gratitude to the Ambassador of Malta to Türkiye H.E. Dr Marisa Farrugia and to the Consul General of Malta in Istanbul Mr Walter Mallia, together with their teams, for their tireless efforts in further strengthening relations between Malta and Türkiye.
