ICYMI: Donald Trump Comes for Social Security — AGAIN Arrow

Turns out that all of Donald Trump's campaign promises to protect Social Security were just talk. After repeatedly vowing that Social Security is "100% safe," the Trump administration is plotting major changes to Social Security. Trump and his cabinet are planning to make it harder for older Americans to qualify for Social Security disability payments, which could result in hundreds of thousands of older Americans losing their benefits.

In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:

"Donald Trump and his administration are once again continuing their crusade to gut a lifeline that has provided financial stability for millions of families and seniors. While they are busy keeping the government shut down to avoid shielding millions of Americans from skyrocketing health care premiums, their plans for Social Security are proof that Trump will never miss an opportunity to sell out hard-working Americans if it means that his billionaire buddies and donors can make an extra buck. Trump and his loyalists are completely hell-bent on making life harder for working families just to protect their billionaire tax breaks."

Despite Social Security being one of the most popular and successful programs in America, the Trump Administration is considering eliminating age as a factor when deciding whether someone is eligible for Social Security disability benefits, or even raising the threshold to age 60 for disability claims. These dangerous cuts would strip benefits from 750,000 people, including 80,000 widows and children.

None of this is surprising. Earlier this year, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent admitted that the Trump Accounts created by Trump's billionaire-first budget bill are a "backdoor for privatizing Social Security." After realizing that he put his foot in his mouth, Bessent had to do damage control on his comments. But then, just last month, Social Security Administration Commissioner Frank Bisignano admitted that he would consider raising the retirement age. Trump and his cronies cannot be trusted to protect seniors' hard-earned benefits.
