The Campbell University College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences named Dr. Andrew Muzyk, associate professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice, as the recipient of the 2026 Research Excellence Award in recognition of his outstanding scholarly achievements, national impact, and commitment to advancing healthcare education and patient care.
Muzyk is widely recognized for his contributions to psychiatric pharmacy, substance use disorder education, and interprofessional health professions education. His research has helped shape both clinical practice and the preparation of future healthcare professionals, particularly in areas related to behavioral health, psychopharmacology, and addiction treatment.
Over the course of his career, Muzyk has authored 85 peer reviewed publications, including 40 as first author, and contributed two textbook chapters. His work has appeared in leading journals and has been cited nearly 1,600 times by scholars and clinicians across multiple health professions disciplines.
In addition to his teaching across health professions programs at Campbell and precepting fourth-year pharmacy students at Duke University Hospital, Dr. Muzyk serves as a faculty member at Duke University, where he collaborates on research initiatives focused on substance use disorders, health professions education, and innovative approaches to patient care. He holds academic appointments at the Duke University School of Medicine and the Duke University School of Nursing. His ability to bridge expertise across institutions has strengthened research partnerships and expanded opportunities for students, faculty, and healthcare professionals alike.
Muzyk has participated in 31 research projects and served as principal investigator on 15 studies. His scholarship has attracted more than $260,000 in research funding from internal, institutional, and national sources, including support from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the Duke Institute for Brain Sciences, and the Duke Academy for Health Professions Education and Academic Development. He currently collaborates on a National Institute on Drug Abuse funded R01 project exploring telemedicine approaches for opioid use disorder treatment.
His influence extends well beyond published research. Muzyk has delivered nearly 300 invited presentations across the United States and has shared his expertise with audiences representing pharmacy, medicine, nursing, and interprofessional education. He has been invited to speak at major professional conferences and leading healthcare institutions, including the Mayo Clinic and the Medical University of South Carolina.
Equally notable is his dedication to mentoring the next generation of healthcare professionals and researchers. Muzyk has served as a preceptor for more than 300 Campbell fourth-year pharmacy students and pharmacy residents. He has mentored more than 20 students and residents in research and scholarly dissemination, helping many present their work nationally and contribute to peer reviewed publications.
In addition to the Research Excellence Award, Muzyk has also received the Dean's Award for Excellence in Teaching (2022) and Educator of the Year (2018), in addition to numerous national researcher and educators awards.
