Artificial Intelligence Task Force to guide responsible use of emerging technology

Marquette University has established a university-wide artificial intelligence task force to guide the responsible use of generative AI across campus. The task force brings together faculty and staff from across disciplines to assess how emerging AI tools are being used in teaching, research, operations and student success/wellness.

Charged with identifying where existing policies, procedures and support structures should be updated or adapted, the task force will focus on ensuring that AI adoption at Marquette is responsible, effective and aligned with the university's Catholic, Jesuit mission. Its work will help clarify shared expectations, identify needed resources and recommend next steps as AI technologies continue to evolve.

The AI Task Force is composed of an executive committee and five work groups: teaching and learning, clinical-based teaching and learning, research, operations, and student success/wellness.

The task force's work will be guided by four foundational principles: Jesuit mission and values; leadership and campus alignment; ethical, inclusive and responsible AI use; and data management and security.

The task force will engage students in this conversation at a later date to ensure their perspectives and experiences inform the university's approach.

Membership for all work groups is included below except for the research group, which is currently in progress. Dr. Jeanne Hossenlopp, the chair of the Research Work Group and vice president for research and innovation, is looking for interested faculty and staff to serve as members.

For individuals considering participating in the research work group, a group of 22 faculty and staff from across campus held discussions in the fall to help identify key opportunities and challenges (including compliance and ethics) when applying AI in research. The University Committee on Research also provided input. Based on the input, two focused task groups under the research umbrella are now being formed (AI tools for research; and compliance, ethics, and responsible use). Faculty and staff interested in joining one of these task groups should contact .

The task force is committed to engaging faculty and staff throughout the process. Faculty and staff will soon receive a survey via email seeking input on how artificial intelligence is - or isn't - being used across teaching, clinical education, research, operations, and student success/wellness. Your feedback will help identify where support, policy updates or new resources may be needed as we navigate this evolving landscape. The survey will be sent from [email protected] early next week.

As progress of the task force progresses, more information will be shared in Marquette Today.
