Greene County - Signs indicating a weight limit of 35 tons for single-unit vehicles and 50 tons for combination vehicles (including tractor-trailers) have been installed for the bridges on Missouri Route 13 (Kansas Expressway) over I-44 in Springfield, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.
The new load posting came about during the department's regular bridge inspection process to analyze load limitations, which have been updated per Federal Highway Administration guidance.
The bridges are rated as fair and were built in 1960. The new weight limit will be in place until the bridges are replaced. Construction for these bridges is scheduled between Fall 2026 and Fall 2031 and is part of the Forward 44: Southwest I-44 Improvements Project. More information on this project can be found here: Forward 44: Southwest I-44 Improvements Project | Missouri Department of Transportation
Previously, a 50-ton weight limit was in place for these bridges.
Approximately 30,931 vehicles travel across these structures each day.
