Improvements to I-84 Eastbound and Local Roadways in Waterbury

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is announcing improvements to I-84 eastbound and local roadways in Waterbury starting on Monday, March 13, 2026. Preliminary project work is scheduled to be completed by Friday, April 3, 2026.

Project No. 0151-0340 consists of the closure and removal of the I-84 eastbound Exit 21 off-ramp while also extending the auxiliary lane from the Route 8 northbound ramp to the Exit 22 off-ramp. The I-84 eastbound at Exit 21 off-ramp has been and will continue to be permanently closed to all traffic. Local intersection modifications are also being completed at eight (8) intersections including traffic control signal movements and pedestrian signal phasing improvements.

CTDOT Project No. 0151-0340 was awarded to Manafort Brothers, Inc. at a cost of $20,798,700.00 on January 16, 2026, and is scheduled to be completed July 26, 2028. This project is administered by the Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Office of Construction, District No. 4 in Thomaston.

LANE CLOSURE/DETOUR INFO

There will be daily lane and shoulder closures on the I-84 eastbound at Exit 22 off-ramp and other locations throughout Waterbury, including South Main, Meadow, Bank, Elm and Liberty Streets starting Friday, March 13 to Friday, April 3, 2026 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Traffic control signing patterns and police will guide motorists through the work zone.

Motorists should be aware that modifications or extensions to this schedule may become necessary due to weather delays or other unforeseen conditions. Motorists are advised to maintain a safe speed when driving in this area.
