Grant advances LAX transformation by improving access and reducing congestion

LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) was awarded a $289 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for new access roads to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), supporting a major piece of the airport's ongoing transformation into a more efficient, welcoming and distinctly Los Angeles gateway. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy made the announcement this week through the Airport Infrastructure Grants (AIG) program to "improve infrastructure, enhance safety and add more family-friendly features for American families."

"This federal funding builds upon the historic investments we're making to ensure travelers have a world-class experience when touching down and taking off in Los Angeles," said Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. "These latest improvements will enhance accessibility and reduce traffic congestion while also supporting jobs, spurring economic growth, and advancing our long-term vision for LAX."

This grant will support current ongoing construction of new ingress roadways into LAX, separating airport traffic from local traffic through the Airfield and Terminal Modernization Program (ATMP) Roadway Improvements Project. The new roadways are expected to significantly reduce congestion on Sepulveda Boulevard and provide more efficient access to one of the world's busiest airports.

"This is an investment in the future of LAX and the experience we want every traveler to have from the moment they arrive," said John Ackerman, Chief Executive Officer, Los Angeles World Airports. "As we continue our transformation, projects like these help us move people more safely and efficiently, while bringing to life our broader vision of an airport that reflects Los Angeles."

Guided by LAX's Big Idea - a unifying narrative that positions the airport as the gateway connecting Los Angeles' cultural and creative capital with the world - the ATMP Roadways Improvement Project and other major investments are helping create a more hospitable, innovative, glamorous, entertaining and iconic airport experience rooted in the spirit of Los Angeles.

LAWA has been awarded FAA AIG grants totaling over $368.6 million for fiscal years 2022-26. AIG funding may be used for airport planning, development, terminal improvements, baggage system upgrades, runway and taxiway rehabilitation, roadway and access improvements, and other safety-related infrastructure needs.
