Pawtucket man sentenced to 10 years in prison for driving death of 34-year-old Providence preschool teacher

Attorney General Peter F. Neronha announced today that a Pawtucket man has been sentenced in Providence County Superior Court to serve 10 years at the Adult Correctional Institutions (ACI) for his role in the driving death of 34-year-old Nanleomariz Albizu during the early morning hours of New Year's Day in 2022.

On July 17, 2026, Superior Court Justice Luis M. Matos sentenced Gregory Miller (age 47) to 15 years with 10 years to serve at the ACI, a five-year loss of license, and a $5,000 fine.

At a hearing on April 27, 2026, the defendant entered a plea of nolo contendere to one count of failure to stop after being involved in a crash that resulted in death and one count of driving to endanger resulting in death.

"The loss of Nanleomariz is an unthinkable tragedy that will forever impact her family, friends, and our community as a whole," said Attorney General Neronha. "Nanleomariz was a daughter, a sister, an aunt, and a preschool teacher who was universally loved and respected by those who knew her. While nothing can bring Nanleomariz back, I hope that this significant sentence brings a sense of peace and closure to those who continue to grieve her loss. I thank the Lincoln Police Department and the Rhode Island State Police for their partnership in this case."

Had the case proceeded to trial, the State was prepared to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that during the early morning hours of January 1, 2022, the defendant left the scene of a car crash that killed Nanleomariz Albizu, a 34-year-old preschool teacher from Providence.

That morning, members of the Lincoln Police Department responded to Cobble Hill Road for a report of a roll-over vehicle crash. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found that the driver of the vehicle, later identified as the defendant, had fled the scene. Rescue personnel located Nanleomariz several yards away from the vehicle, unconscious and suffering from significant trauma to her head. Rescue personnel immediately transported Nanleomariz to Rhode Island Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.

Investigators confirmed via video surveillance footage from Bally's Twin River Casino that the pair arrived and left the casino in the vehicle involved in the crash. The defendant later turned himself in to Lincoln Police Headquarters on January 3, 2022.

Assistant Attorney General John Corrigan of the Office of the Attorney General and Detectives Richard Bousquet and Kyle Wingate of the Lincoln Police Department led the investigation and prosecution of the case with the assistance of the Rhode Island State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit, Captain Jeffrey L'Heureux and Lieutenant Adam Kennett.
