Gov. Lee Announces Key Leadership Transition at TN Department of Agriculture

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee announced a key leadership transition at the Tennessee Department of Agriculture (TDA). Dr. Charlie Hatcher, D.V.M., will retire from his role after nearly seven years of service as commissioner, and more than 21 years of state service. Andy Holt has been appointed commissioner, effective October 1, 2025.

"Charlie has faithfully served Tennesseans since day one of the Lee administration," said Gov. Lee. "Under his leadership, the Department of Agriculture has made significant investments in our rural communities and safeguarded our food supply. I'm deeply grateful for his decades of service to Tennessee's farming families, and Maria and I wish Charlie continued success and pray God's richest blessings over him in the days ahead."

Charlie Hatcher, D.V.M., was sworn in as Tennessee's 38th Commissioner of Agriculture in January of 2019 and has led the department through some of the state's most exciting and challenging years. During his tenure, the Department has made record investments to strengthen food and fiber supply chains, expand rural businesses, conserve natural resources, and create rural jobs while supporting nearly 70,000 farming families. Prior to his role as Commissioner, Dr. Hatcher served as State Veterinarian for ten years.

"It has been the honor of my life to work alongside Governor Lee and my fellow commissioners to strengthen rural communities across our state," said Commissioner Hatcher. "Together, we have made the largest investments in rural Tennessee's history, expanded opportunities for young people through FFA, 4H, and education partnerships, and safeguarded farmland for future generations. The Governor's commitment to addressing farmland loss has been extraordinary, and I am proud to have played a role in carrying forward his vision. From historic rural development initiatives to the continued success of the Tennessee State Fair, our collaborative efforts with the General Assembly, Tennessee Farm Bureau and other valued stakeholders have produced remarkable results for the people of Tennessee."

Andy Holt has been appointed commissioner of TDA.

"Andy is a committed public servant who brings a personal understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing Tennessee farmers," said Gov. Lee. "I'm grateful for his leadership and am confident he will serve Tennesseans with integrity by strengthening rural communities and supporting our agriculture industry."

Holt currently serves as Deputy Commissioner for the Tennessee Department of Agriculture, overseeing day-to-day operations to ensure that all programs and services - including food safety, animal and plant health, forestry, and agricultural development - are carried out in accordance with the Lee administration's goals. Prior to joining TDA, Holt represented House District 76 in the Tennessee General Assembly. A graduate of the University of Tennessee, Holt lives with his wife, Ellie, and their seven children on the family farm near Dresden, Tennessee.
