On 5 March, ahead of an extraordinary EU Foreign Affairs Council, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Kęstutis Budrys, spoke by telephone with Ayman Safadi, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Lithuanian and Jordanian Ministers discussed the security situation in the Middle East and the situation of Lithuanian citizens in Jordan.

During the conversation, the head of Lithuania's diplomacy voiced Lithuania's solidarity with the people of Jordan and sincere condolences to all those affected by the recent, unjustified Iranian attacks.

"We strongly condemn Iran's continued attacks on Jordan and other neighbouring countries, which are totally unacceptable. These actions pose a direct threat not only to the Middle East region but also to global security. We are following the situation closely, and we hope that Lithuanian citizens in Jordan are safe and will receive all necessary assistance if needed," said Budrys.

Jordan's Foreign Minister assured Budrys that assistance would be provided to Lithuanian citizens stranded in or transiting via the country as a result of Iran's strikes.

Lithuania's Foreign Minister also deplored the failure of negotiations on Iran's nuclear and missile programmes. Budrys said that Iran had repeatedly demonstrated indifference to the international community's efforts to address key outstanding issues through diplomatic means.

"We call on all sides to refrain from further escalation and resume the diplomatic efforts to prevent a wider regional conflict," the Minister said.
