ATLANTA (October 28, 2025) - Lt. Governor Burt Jones has appointed Sen. RaShaun Kemp (D-Atlanta) to serve on the Georgia Council on Literacy, a statewide body charged with improving literacy outcomes for Georgians of all ages.
"I'd like to thank Lt. Governor Jones for the opportunity to serve on the Georgia Council on Literacy and to join so many dedicated leaders working to ensure every Georgian can read with confidence," said Sen. Kemp. "Drawing on my background in education and school leadership, I know how a child's ability to read can shape their future. That understanding has guided my work from the classroom to the Capitol, and I'm eager to build on the Council's progress to strengthen literacy across our state."
Sen. Kemp continued, "Too many of our students continue to fall behind in reading, and countless adults face similar challenges. We have the chance to change that trajectory by expanding access to the science of reading, supporting our teachers and prioritizing the needs of our most vulnerable learners. I look forward to working with my colleagues to make literacy a lasting priority and to help every Georgian gain the skills to learn and succeed."
The Georgia Council on Literacy was created to improve literacy outcomes statewide and align education policy with evidence-based practices. The council includes members from the Georgia General Assembly, state education agencies, universities and community organizations. Its responsibilities include reviewing statewide literacy data, evaluating programs and best practices and making policy and budget recommendations.
