Mayor Leads 9/11 Commemorative Flag Raising Ceremony

The Mayor of Waverley led a commemorative flag raising ceremony on Friday 11 September to mark the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States on 11 September 2001.

Deputy Mayor, Councillor Penny Rivers and Leader of the Council, Cllr Paul Follows, as well as councillors and staff gathered outside The Burys to remember the victims, survivors, emergency responders and all those affected by the attacks that claimed thousands of lives.

The ceremony began with a short address by the Mayor, followed by a prayer and a two-minute silence. At 1.46pm, marking the moment the first aircraft struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York, the United States Flag was raised in remembrance.

The Mayor, Councillor David Munro, said:

"Today we pause to remember the thousands of innocent people who lost their lives on 11 September 2001, and to honour the extraordinary courage shown by emergency responders and ordinary citizens in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

"Twenty-five years on, the events of that day continue to resonate around the world. This anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on the values of unity, resilience and compassion that emerged from those dark moments, and to remember all those whose lives were changed forever.

"I am grateful to everyone who joined us today to pay their respects and ensure that the memory of those affected is never forgotten."
