SSTL in Bangkok for a busy week of space collaboration

Sat, 31 Oct 2026 SSTL has enjoyed a busy and rewarding week in Bangkok, Thailand, taking part in three international space events bringing together agencies, industry and researchers from across the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.

Our colleagues Alex da Silva Curiel and Emma Turnbull represented SSTL at Thailand Space Expo 2026, the 32nd Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum (APRSAF-32) and the 10th Global Moon Village Workshop & Symposium, all held in Bangkok during the final week of October.

With a stand at Thailand Space Expo, SSTL had the opportunity to reconnect with longstanding partners, meet new contacts and discuss the growing opportunities for small satellite technology across the region. SSTL has a long history of working with partners in Asia, helping nations develop their own space capabilities through satellite missions, technology transfer and training.

Alex contributed to several discussions throughout the week, including hosting a panel at Thailand Space Expo on Small Satellites & Space Applications for Capacity Building & Economic Development Across the Pacific Region. He also delivered a 'Rising Star' presentation introducing SSTL, our small satellite philosophy and some of the missions and technologies developed over more than 40 years.

At the Global Moon Village Workshop (pic above), Alex joined an international panel exploring how lessons learned from managing space debris around Earth can help support sustainable activities around the Moon. With lunar exploration gathering pace, the discussion highlighted the importance of applying decades of experience in Earth orbit to the challenges ahead.

A particular honour was welcoming Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, H.E. Professor Dr Yodchanan Wongsawat, to the SSTL stand.. (see pic below.) Alex had the opportunity to introduce our capabilities and discuss SSTL's experience of working with international partners to develop their space programmes.

The week also provided a reminder of the lasting relationships built through international collaboration. Among the visitors to our stand were former SSTL customer engineers who had previously worked alongside our teams in Guildford. Much to their amusement, they discovered photographs of themselves featured in our exhibition graphics. A particularly enjoyable reunion, and a reminder that the people and friendships are just as important as the technology.

Our thanks go to GISTDA, Thailand's Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency, and the wider organising teams for their excellent hosting and hospitality throughout the week. Bringing three complementary international events together in Bangkok proved a great success, creating opportunities for conversations and connections that might not otherwise have happened.

It was a pleasure to return to Thailand, catch up with old friends and make a few new ones. We look forward to continuing those conversations and building on SSTL's longstanding relationships across the region.
