Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site Announces Fall Living History Events

WINNABOW
Sep 25, 2025

This fall, Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site (BTFA) will host two free living history programs highlighting a variety of historic crafts and trades. BTFA is administered by North Carolina Historic Sites, a division of the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

On Saturday, Sept. 27, from 11 a.m.- 3 p.m., the site will host "The Carolina Blues: Indigo on the Cape Fear." The program will explain how enslaved African laborers skillfully extracted valuable dye from indigo plants, as well as the science behind dye production. Visitors will be given the opportunity to view and work an active fermentation vat. Dyeing demonstrations will occur throughout the course of the program. The Friends of Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson will sell shirts for $25 each for visitors to try their hand at resist dyeing.

The site's next living history day will take place on Sat., Oct. 18, from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. This program explores colonial life and trades at the port. Costumed historic interpreters will demonstrate blacksmithing, woodworking, cooking, baking, candle dipping, and colonial games throughout the day. The event will also feature a demonstration of an active tar kiln, which was essential to the production of valuable naval stores in the colony. This event is free to attend.
