FDNY releases new PSA about the dangers of improper disposal of lithium-ion batteries

January 20, 2026

The FDNY, in collaboration with the New York City Department of Sanitation, released a new Public Service Announcement (PSA) on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2026, reminding New Yorkers about the dangers of improperly disposing of lithium-ion batteries.

Putting lithium-ion batteries in the trash or recycling at home is illegal and dangerous. Recycle batteries by taking them to a Special Waste Drop-Off Site or a safe disposal event. For disposal instructions and more disposal options, go here.

Be sure to individually bag batteries or tape ends before disposing of them.

For more lithium-ion battery safety information, go to FDNYSmart.org.

The Department's PSA program is made possible in part with support from the FDNY Foundation, the official nonprofit organization of the Department.
