Graham Celebrates Medal of Honor Awarded to South Carolina Veteran

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) this week attended the White House ceremony where Major James Capers Jr., a South Carolina Vietnam War veteran, received the Medal of Honor.

The Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military honor, must be presented to the recipient within five years of the recognized action unless Congress waives this criterion. Senator Graham introduced legislation in the Senate to drop the statutory time requirement for Major Capers and worked with U.S. Representative Ralph Norman (R-South Carolina) to ensure the final bill made it to President Trump's desk.

"I was honored and humbled to join Major Capers as he received the Medal of Honor. His story exemplifies South Carolina's commitment to service, and his legacy is one that serves as an inspiration to all," said Senator Graham.

"Unfortunately, Major Capers' heroism was overlooked when he returned from Vietnam. Yesterday, we rectified that wrong, honoring this legend with the distinction he has earned. Congressman Norman was one of the driving forces that allowed this to occur, and I'm grateful for his efforts. I applaud President Trump for recognizing Major Capers' valor and bestowing this award on such a great American patriot."

Background on Major Capers' service:

James Capers, Jr. was born in South Carolina in 1937, and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at age eighteen. During the Vietnam War, Capers led a prisoner of war (POW) rescue mission ordered by President Johnson and commanded attacks on the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces. As a trailblazer, he was the first African American to lead a Marine Reconnaissance company and receive a battlefield commission. In 2010, Major Capers, Jr. was awarded the Silver Star, the nation's third highest award for valor.
