As it does every summer, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation is launching the #ViajaSeguro campaign in an effort to raise public awareness of the precautions that should be taken before travelling abroad. The Ministry provides citizens with useful tools to minimise risks and recommends that they register with the Travellers' Register before any journey, as well as consulting the Travel Recommendations.
It also highlights the importance of taking out travel insurance with medical cover that includes hospitalisation and repatriation costs before travelling abroad. Having travel insurance provides access to essential medical care abroad, which can be extremely costly in some countries
The Ministry's website provides access to the Travel Recommendations, which contain useful and up-to-date information on each country. At the beginning of these recommendations, there is an "Important Notes" section that includes an alert level for each country, as well as information on required travel documents, vaccinations and safety conditions to consider.
Before travelling abroad, the Ministry also recommends registering with the Travellers' Register, which enables the Spanish authorities to locate or contact, where possible, registered Spanish travellers in the event of a serious emergency. This tool is completely free of charge and offers all the necessary guarantees of confidentiality.
Should the need arise, the 88 Spanish Consulates-General abroad, as well as the 2 Spanish Consulates and the 90 Consular Sections within Spanish Embassies, are on hand to deal with any emergency that may arise. In 2025, Spanish consular offices dealt with around 9,000 collective and individual emergencies abroad, as shown in the latest consular activity report. In this regard, the Foreign Office operates an emergency helpline available 24 hours a day, every day of the year, to handle emergencies, including assistance for victims of gender-based violence and general consular protection.
The #ViajaSeguro campaign also calls on travellers to act responsibly, reminding them that, once abroad, they are subject to the legal system of their destination country, whose rules and regulations they must observe and respect at all times.
