Duolingo (DUOL) stock trades at 51.9 times its earnings over the past twelve months, compared to 22.8 for the S&P 500. At that multiple, buyers are paying for profit Duolingo has yet to earn. That figure already includes November 4, when the shares jumped 26% a day after management said daily active users grew faster. At the November 3 close, it was about 41 times. So is Duolingo's business growing fast enough to back that price?
Duolingo Needs Faster Growth Than Its Latest Quarter
Partly. Just to hold today's share price while its P/E comes down, Duolingo would have to grow revenue 18.9% a year for the next five years, offering no return on top. Over the twelve months to September 2026, revenue grew 22.6%, clearing that pace. In the latest quarter, fiscal Q3 2026, revenue increased 13.7% from a year earlier, falling below the requirement.
Duolingo closed with a market value of $7.56 billion on November 4. Valued at a mature P/E of 22.8, a Trefis figure that matches the S&P 500's P/E only by chance, the company would need net income of $332 million in the twelve months ending September 2031. At an 11.8% net margin, Duolingo would earn that from roughly $2.8 billion of revenue. That margin lands between the 10.4% average and the 13.2% peak of its net margin over the past three years, with four twelve-month readings from 2025 and 2026 left out as unusually high. Duolingo would have to reach that target from $1.18 billion of revenue over five years. Trefis rules set a five-year timeline because Duolingo's current P/E is 2.28 times the mature multiple, and any ratio of at least 2 but under 3 receives five years.
The P/E, the margin and the five years are Trefis assumptions, not forecasts. The mature P/E gives 60% of its weight to a set level of 18.0 for consumer discretionary stocks. The rest comes from Duolingo's own average P/E, which sat at 98.1 over the past eleven quarters but is counted as only 30. As a result, the mature P/E lands far below Duolingo's own average.
Does Management Expect Duolingo To Grow Fast Enough?
Not for fiscal Q4 2026. On the November 3 call, management guided to 14% revenue growth for the quarter, roughly matching the pace of the latest period. For all of 2026, the company expects 18% growth. That falls just short of the yearly rate Duolingo would have to maintain, and the faster quarters behind that figure came early in the year.
Duolingo makes most of its money from subscription sales. Management said daily active users grew 29% in fiscal Q3 2026, marking a second quarter of faster growth, and it expects revenue growth to follow once bookings growth rebuilds. Yet it guided bookings growth to 13% for fiscal Q4 2026.
What If Duolingo Has Less Time To Grow?
Duolingo would then have to grow far faster. With three years instead of five, the yearly rate would be 33.4%, and the years move the answer more than the mature P/E does. Using the set level of 18.0 as the mature P/E would raise the rate only to 24.6%.
Over twelve-month periods, Duolingo has grown faster than the five-year requirement in each of the past five years. Its quarters look weaker, however. Quarterly revenue growth has fallen in each of the four quarters since fiscal Q3 2025, when it was 41.1%.
For today's price to hold, Duolingo must turn its faster user growth into faster bookings and then faster revenue. If revenue keeps growing at the latest quarter's pace, Duolingo would need more years to grow into its price, and the stock becomes a riskier bet. Duolingo is expected to report fiscal Q4 2026 in February 2027, and that quarter's revenue growth is the number to watch.
