Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park Announces flight operations for January 2026:
January 7 between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. for invasive guinea grass control work in the coastal backcountry from sea level to 2,400-ft. elevation.
January 8 between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. for aerial control and mapping of fountain grass from the park's west boundary to Keauhou and from sea level to 4,000-ft. elevation.
January 12 and 15 from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. for native plant survey and seed collection in the southwest coastal backcountry between sea level and 2,500-ft. elevation.
January 13, time to be determined, for fence line survey and petrel monitoring on Maunaloa between 9,000- and 9,500-ft. elevation.
January 13 between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., for native plant monitoring in the East Rift Zone between 2,500- and 3,500-ft. elevation.
January 15, time to be determined, for control of invasive trees from the park's west boundary to Pepeiao between the 1,000- and 2,500-ft. elevation.
January 26 and 29 between 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. for native plant survey and seed collection in the East Rift Zone between 1,500- and 2,500-ft. elevation.
January 27 from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. for native plant survey and seed collection in the 'Ōlaʻa Tract between 3,500- and 4,500-ft. elevation.
January 28, time to be determined, for fence material transport on Maunaloa between 9,000- and 9,500-ft. elevation.
USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory may conduct additional flight operations over Kīlauea and Mauna Loa to assess volcanic activity and maintain instrumentation.
The park regrets any noise impact to residents and park visitors. Dates and times are subject to change based on aircraft availability and weather.
Management of the park requires the use of aircraft to monitor and research volcanic activity, conduct search-and-rescue missions and law enforcement operations, support management of natural and cultural resources, and to maintain backcountry facilities.
