From Smartphones to E-Bikes: Fire Prevention Week Focuses on Lithium-Ion Battery Safety

The City of Regina is celebrating Fire Prevention Week from October 5 to 11, 2025. This year's theme, "Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home", focuses on lithium-ion battery fire safety.

"We are thrilled to be proclaiming Oct 5 to 11 as Fire Prevention Week in Regina," said Regina Mayor Chad Bachynski. "The week serves as an important reminder of the actions we can all take to keep our community safe from fire. I encourage everyone to take a moment and learn about how to use lithium-ion batteries safely."

One way to celebrate Fire Prevention Week is by coming to a Fire Station Open House. Regina Fire & Protective Services invites residents to visit the Fire Station open houses throughout the week. Open houses allow you to tour the fire station, meet firefighters and learn more about lithium-ion battery safety and fire safety in your home!

Fire Station Open Houses:
• Wednesday, October 8, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Fire Station #5, 2700 E Arens Road

• Saturday, October 11, 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.
Fire Station #6, 303 Rink Avenue

"We all have lithium-ion batteries in our homes, from lawn and power tools, to children's toys, to the electronics we carry with us everywhere, these batteries power most rechargeable things," said Fire Chief Layne Jackson. "Knowing how to safely buy, charge and dispose of these batteries is critical to fire safety in your home."

To keep your family safe, Regina Fire & Protective Services and the National Fire Protection Association reminds residents to:

1. Buy only safety certified products.
o When buying a rechargeable product, look for a safety certification mark from a nationally recognized testing lab on the packaging and product, which means that it meets important safety standards. If it doesn't have a testing lab stamp, don't buy it as it could increase the risk of fire.

2. Charge devices safely.
o Always use a charger approved by the manufacturer.
o Charge your device on a hard surface. Don't charge it under a pillow or on the bed or couch. This could cause a fire.
o Don't overcharge. Unplug it or remove the battery when it's fully charged.

3. Safely dispose of batteries.
o Don't throw lithium-ion batteries in the garbage or recycling bins because they could catch fire.
o The best way to dispose of lithium-ion batteries is at a safe battery recycling location. Visit call2recycle.org to find a recycling spot near you.
