Fall Watering

September 29th, 2026

Fall Watering

As we transition into fall, it's important to continue the water-wise habits that have made a real difference throughout the year. Thanks to community efforts, we've seen encouraging progress in conservation, but our work isn't done yet. Sustained water savings now help us head into next year with as much water in storage as possible.

Smart Fall Watering Practices

With cooler temperatures and shorter days, most yards require significantly less water than they did during the summer. Consider these fall watering tips:

• Reduce watering frequency. Lawns typically need water only once every 7-10 days in early fall and even less later in the season.
• Water in the morning to minimize evaporation and allow plants to absorb moisture efficiently.
• Turn off automatic sprinklers during rainy periods or consider a smart controller that adjusts watering based on weather.
• Focus on deep, infrequent watering to help plants prepare for winter dormancy.

Preparing Your Yard and Garden for Fall

Autumn is an ideal time to give your yard the care it needs before winter sets in. A few simple steps can help plants stay healthy and return strong in the spring:

• Aerate your lawn to improve soil health and root strength.
• Apply a fall fertilizer formulated for Utah's climate to support winter hardiness.
• Remove spent annuals and trim back perennials to promote healthy regrowth.
• Spread mulch around trees and garden beds to protect roots and retain moisture.
• Plant fall-friendly bulbs like tulips, daffodils, and crocus for early spring color.
• Clean up leaves, especially on turf, to avoid matting and mold during wetter months.

By adjusting watering habits and preparing landscapes for the colder season, we can continue making meaningful contributions to our water supply while keeping yards healthy and beautiful!
