Access Restored to Root Glacier via New Trail Reroute

COPPER CENTER, Alaska - Visitors can once again safely access Root Glacier in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve using a newly established trail reroute. National Park Service employees, with assistance from local volunteers, developed the new route after unstable ground and landslide hazards forced the closure of the previous glacier access near the Erie Mine/Root Glacier Trail.

The reroute restores public access to one of the park's most popular destinations while avoiding an active landslide hazard identified earlier this season. The closure of the original access route remains in effect to protect visitors from unstable terrain and the potential for falling rock.

"Root Glacier is one of the most iconic destinations in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, and we're pleased to restore safe access while protecting visitors from a changing natural hazard," said Acting Superintendent Joshua Scott. "This project reflects the dedication of our staff and volunteers, who worked quickly to establish a new route so visitors can continue experiencing this remarkable landscape safely."

The new access route starts 1.8 miles along Erie Mine Trail. Continue about ten yards beyond the Amazon Creek footbridge, then turn left to begin heading downhill. The slope transitions from brushy terrain to steeper rocky talus, and after roughly 0.6 miles, you'll reach the edge of the glacier.

Trail crews improved portions of the reroute by brushing vegetation and improving the walking surface where practical. Beyond the improved section, the route transitions onto natural terrain consisting of rocky glacial debris and muddy areas along the glacier's edge. The rerouted trail is about 2.5 miles (one way) to get to the glacier access.

Visitors should be prepared for uneven footing and changing trail conditions. Traction devices are strongly recommended for anyone planning to step onto the glacier. Due to the steep grade at the new access point to the Root Glacier, it is recommended to put on traction devices before attempting to step foot on the ice.

Because glaciers and glacial moraines are constantly changing, conditions can shift rapidly throughout the season. Visitors should stay on the designated route, obey all posted closure signs, and avoid entering the closed area, where unstable ground, landslide hazards and falling rock continue to present a serious risk of injury.

Visitors are encouraged to check current trail conditions before traveling to the Kennecott area by visiting the park website or speaking with park staff at the Kennecott Visitor Center or Wrangell-St. Elias Visitor Center in Copper Center.
