The San Rafael Fire Department has installed Red Flag Warning signs at five fire stations throughout the city, providing an additional way to alert residents when dangerous fire weather conditions exist.
What is a Red Flag Warning?
A Red Flag Warning is issued by the National Weather Service when weather conditions create extreme wildfire risk. This happens when high winds (typically 45+ mph) combine with very low humidity (10-20%), making vegetation extremely flammable. Even a small spark can quickly become a major wildfire.
How the Signs Work
When a Red Flag Warning is issued, these signs will be opened/displayed to provide a visible alert to the community. When passing by a fire station, an open sign indicates current Red Flag conditions. Otherwise, the signs display general emergency preparedness information.
What to Do During a Red Flag Warning
Avoid all outdoor flames (no barbecues or fire pits)
Don't use lawn mowers or power tools
Keep vehicles off dry grass
Report any smoke immediately by calling 911
Have your emergency kit ready
